People don't want a quarter inch drill....

They want a quarter inch hole.

This is a super simple but profound observation made by Harvard Marketing professor Ted Levitt and it is one of the keys to writing that will help get you results.

Ask yourself this question before you send a Tweet about a new listing, update your Facebook status about a new listing, write your item description or an ad….are you addressing what need or want your item is fulfilling for your customer? If not, ask yourself why your customers are buying your item, what need is it fulfilling, what want is it satisfying, or how is it going to make them feel. Once you answer those questions, write to that! It’s a simple exercise that could make all the difference!

Let’s practice for a little bit. I posted this in the Etsy forums and I can't promise to get to every one, but I'll do a few, at least! Link me to your latest item in the comment section and tell me how you’d tweet for it or give me the first line of the description. Then I’ll critique it and show you how you could’ve tweeted it or wrote it, using this philosophy.

  1. Hi! I love that metaphor! It's true - they want a 1/4" hole!

Maybe you could help me with this one: http://www.etsy.com/listing/48138397/domino-pendant-home-sweet-home-nesting

"What a sweet little nesting bird making a home for her eggs! Home sweet home – there’s no place like it.

The collage on this domino pendant is a print of a larger work of art that I made specifically for my domino jewelry."

  3. There are a few different angles you could go with this...

"Bring the comfort of home where ever you go..."

"Keep your love of home close to your heart...."

Or if wanting to go for people that don't live near their home, you could go with....

"Even though you are far away...keep your home right by your heart..."

And if you just wanted to go with the uniqueness of it...

"You are unique...shouldn't your jewelry be?"
    Or
"you are one of a kind and your jewelry should be too!"

    Thoughts? :-)

  4. Niiice! I had thought about going the angle of keeping home with you but just couldn't find the right words.

I like this: "Even though you are far away...keep your home right by your heart..."

It speaks to a rather universal need - a home or the feeling of home.

    Thank you!! :)

  6. I love this post! I know that this is true. Here's mine:

Round Pearls Peacock 6mm. Pearls that are really round are kinda hard to find, if ya know what I mean.

I want to do what you are talking about without sacrificing the personality behind it. Thanks!

  8. Janet....oooh! I've not tried a supply shop yet! Let's see how I do. :-)

I love how you've written your descriptions!! It's got personality and spunk and FUN. I love it!! Honestly, I think you are doing just fine on your own! So as not to change the voice, I'm going to tell you HOW to write that first sentence and give you a couple of suggestions but I really think you should keep it in YOUR voice. It's fun!

    Here we go...

First ask yourself..."What need are these pearls satisfying for the buyer?" From what you have in your description, it sounds like almost perfectly round pearls are hard to find...right? Okay, so these pearls satisfy the need a designer may have for perfectly round pearls. Write to that...

When kinda round pearls just won't do...I've got the perfect pearls for you!

As close as you've ever seen to perfectly round pearls....

    See? Like that!
    Hope that helps!

  13. Hi Joanna! I'm thinking the tweet for HIDE A HEART might be something like:

Christmas in July Surprise 4 friend or lover!

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/51637634/red-glass-xoxo-or-claddagh-heart-for

Your thoughts when you have a moment?

  14. Angelique....
I'm going to give you some ideas for your "Leaning Red Apples" painting...

Decorate your space with this bold and beautiful painting...

A kitchen isn't just to cook in, turn it into a gallery with his original artwork...

There's a couple of ideas for you! Hope that helps a bit!

    McCatherine...how neat are those?

I see what you are doing with the Christmas in July..you want it to show up when people search that, right? My personal belief (that you by no means have to agree with...) is that if you speak to the need or want that your item is satisfying, you might have better luck! Or you'll at least be connecting with potential customers in a more emotionlly driven way..

    If I were you, I would keep the Christmas in July in your title, but open up your description with that need or want based sentence....for instance;

A little bit of your love they can hold in their hands...this decorative heart will show them how much you care!

This decorative heart will touch their hearts and remind them of your love...

    Or something along those lines...

What do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts! : )
