Why don't you have a plan?

No one is going to buy from you if they don’t know you are there, right? So you know you need to be doing some promoting and marketing to get as much exposure as inexpensively as you can. As much as you may not like it, you know it’s a necessary part of running your business, if you want to have a successful business.

Because you know this, you’ve thought of some marketing ideas, to get your name out there. But have you wrote a plan? A plan that includes things like an outline of the steps to put each marketing idea into action? Or tracks the results of your marketing so you know what’s working and what’s not? Maybe even a schedule for your marketing? These are the kinds of things (and more!) that your marketing plan should address and just the action of writing them down and organizing your thoughts, will help cement the plan in your head and make you more committed to following through with it.

Writing a marketing plan, should be one of your first tasks when you open up your shop! In my Etsy shop, I have a marketing workbook with forms that will help you do exactly that!

http://http://www.etsy.com/listing/41619333/marketing-workbook-ebook-forms-to-help

And if you already have a plan or if you plan on taking this advice and writing one, here is a marketing schedule form that you can download, for free!

(the link to download the form is below.)

Use it how you would like, but I'll tell you how I use it.

The Action row is for the the marketing activities you are going to be doing that particular day. The Build row is for you to write down the things you have to do to put a marketing idea together, before it's ready to be put into action. Things like, design a flyer or make a sample.

The Contact row is for you to write down the names and numbers of people you need to contact, regarding your marketing. Maybe the owner of a store that you want to place your flyer in. Or a fellow Etsy seller that you would like to do some cross promoting with.

But again, you use it the way you find it works best for YOU. There is no right or wrong way. Just download it and use it well! Click the image below to download your form!

Media leads changes.

Good Morning!

Sorry for taking so long to post this, but I spent a day trying to find a solution that would allow me to still post the media leads AND get people who were following up on the leads, to do it in a timely manner, as the leads are time sensitive and they DO "expire", with this particular media lead source.

Unfortunately, there is just no way to make both things happen.

So I won't be posting them on a regular basis, but I will continue to post when I find or hear about a media lead that is not time sensitive and/or not from that particular source. (Don't forget, my media leads source is just one of the many really helpful things I tell you about in my marketing report that I sell in my Etsy shop.) http://www.etsy.com/shop/ataglancegraphics

BUT....because I am so disappointed that I have to stop posting my media leads on a regular basis, if you email me TODAY ONLY, I will tell you how YOU can receive the same media leads. No questions asked and no strings attached. :-)

And keep checking back because either later today or tomorrow I am going to post a really cool free form for you!

Thanks for understanding!

Etsy Sellers...low views and sales? A pep talk..WITH ideas!

No ONE marketing activity should make or break you. If it does, then you need to think of other marketing ideas to get your name out there. Some marketing activities will get you more results than others but counting on one specific thing to drive traffic to your shop is only going to serve to limit you.

Right now a ton of Etsy shops are experience low views and sales. A big problem appears to be that Etsy listings are not making it to Google shopping. Frustrating? Damn right. But let’s FIX it the issue…low views and sales. Because beyond posting in the forums or sending emails to admin, the Google search issue is pretty much out of your hands…so as soon as you are done posting that post or sending that email, clear your mind and sit down to make a list of other marketing activities you could be doing.

Like….

Jewelry shops…
Have you come up with a marketing campaign aimed at men? Now wait…before you think this chick has NO CLUE what she’s talking about, let me point something out. Who buys for women? Men! Especially around holidays like Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day. If you design and write the marketing in a way that shows you are trying to help them and you will make it SUPER easy for them to shop (offer to come back and collect orders if they don’t want to shop online), this gets great results. Make a nice catalog or brochure of your product and write a great sales letter and drop it off to men dominated businesses, such as; car repair shops, construction companies, electricians, plumbing companies, supply stores for any of these industries, car dealerships, etc.

This is definitely an outside the box way of thinking but it is a demographic that gets completely overlooked.

Bath and Beauty shops….
Soap makers…..Have you talked to the Realtors in your area and packaged and showcased your products as a great closing gift for their clients?

All bath and beauty sellers….Have you approached women dominated businesses and asked to leave samples of your product and left your business cards?

These are just few ideas …and hopefully they get my point across. You’ve got to get creative and get yourself noticed out in the REAL WORLD….you’ll feel better doing SOMETHING to help your shop. Mentally, it puts you in a better place, realizing your business IS in your control and not at the mercy of Google Search.

Because really, in the end, you and only you are responsible for your success or failure...don’t let one problem be your downfall….get out there and fix it!!!

Wearable Items...Why are you not showing them being WORN?

This goes for everything from bags to dresses to jewelry….

As a shop owner and a salesperson you want to make the online buying experience as close to the in store buying experience as you can. Part of the in store experience that almost every single shopper does is either try things on, if possible, or at the very least hold the item up against themselves. If it’s a bag, they’ll throw the bag over their shoulder and see how it looks and feels, if it’s a bracelet, they’ll throw it on and admire it. Every wearable items shop should be trying to imitate this little ritual almost everyone does by showcasing your items being worn.

Why do you think catalogs don’t just have pictures of items and they have pictures of items being worn or used? Because they know showing customers pictures of the item being worn helps customers imagine themselves wearing or using the item and that’s exactly what they want…they want you emotionally involved in the item…why? Because that makes you more likely to buy it!

And before someone says it, let’s address the biggest argument against doing this, which is, “But customers don’t like to know it’s been worn/used/etc.”

If you think about it….every time you buy something new from a store, how many people have had their hands on it….during the manufacturing process, then the shipping process, then the stocking process and then all the shoppers who may pick it up and check it out or try it on. We all know this and are aware of it, which is why the majority of us clean or wash our items before we wear them….do these few customers that don’t want to buy something because it was modeled think the items they buy in the store are just created out of no-one-has-ever-touched-this-before magic dust or what?? LOL

In all seriousness…my answer to this side of the argument is do you want to cater to the few or the majority? I guarantee you that more customers will appreciate seeing your items being worn in your pictures than the few that will turn up their noses BECAUSE it’s been worn.

I will mention one exception to this, earrings. I can see why people wouldn’t want to wear earrings that have been modeled and been in someone else’s ear. But that can easily be addressed in a few different ways. Some ideas…(keep in mind I’m not a jewelry designer so I don’t know how practical some of these ideas may be, but hopefully these ideas will at least inspire you to think of some ideas of your own)
Change out the part that goes in the ear, make it clear all your items are properly cleaned and sterilized before they ship out, find a way to model the earrings without them actually being in the ear (attach a clip–on part, perhaps?), if possible, make “display only” version or even model them on a mannequin.

Another good reason to showcase your items being worn is that it also helps buyers determine proportions, sizes, etc. It’s great to list measurements but really customers get a much better idea of how big/small an item is by seeing it on.

Give it a try! It WORKS!
Happy sales to you!

Local Marketing...Help them help YOU.

If you aren’t devoting much time to building a local following to your shop and blog, you are really missing out on a great opportunity for potentially free marketing!

So much energy is devoted to online marketing and advertising but there is a whole world outside your door that you and your potential customers are a part of every day. If you are spending all your time and energy marketing online, you are missing out on marketing to people as they go about their normal daily routines and all you need to start this is adding a “local businesses” link to your blog and a few willing local businesses.

Think about it….if your target market is moms. Think of somewhere moms might frequent. Well, you know they spend a lot of time going to piano lessons, voice lessons, dance lessons, etc…get where I’m going? Why not send a letter to these businesses and ask them if you can place a brochure for your shop in their place of business and in exchange tell them you will place an advertisement for their business on your “local businesses” blog page. If you write the proposal letter convincing and persuasive enough, (talk about how many followers and/or hits your blog gets, how you are building a local following if you don’t already have one, tell them about upcoming local shows you will be doing, etc…) they are sure to be more than willing to help a fellow business owner out. That’s the feeling your letter should convey…small businesses sticking together and helping each other with the common goal of supporting your local economy!

This is just one example....sit and think outside the box and think of where your target market goes during the course of their daily routine…you’ll see you’ll come up with tons of potential businesses you could be putting your brochure in AND you’d be doing a good deed at the same time! (supporting your local economy!)

Happy Sales!

Finders Fees and Referrals

You might think that you can’t afford to give away your product or give discounts to people that have referred you or brought you a buyer…but really, you can’t afford NOT to.

Sometimes giving up some (or even all…) of your profit actually works in your favor!
One of the first things you learn in marketing/advertising is that it costs a whole lot more to get a new client than it does to keep an old one.
So while maybe on one particular customer you didn’t make any money because it cost you more to pay out that referral or finder’s fee, but if that customer has a good experience buying from you and is happy with your product, they will most likely come back to buy again and become a promoter of you by telling all their family and friends where they got the item/product from! (Especially true if you reward referrals)

Let’s say you make $5.00 profit on what you are selling. When you break it down, maybe getting that one customer cost you your $5.00 profit, but if that customer comes back and buys….and brings you 3 more customers…now it has cost you only $5.00 to reach four customers. One repeat customer and 3 NEW customers for $5.00?? Not a bad deal!!

Think about what spend on advertising and marketing. Even if you are only using marketing and advertising that is free…think of the time you are spending…put a dollar amount on that and you will see that giving up that $5.00 profit that you gave away was your most efficient marketing money ever spent!!

And as always….you have to analyze your business and make sound financial decisions!

Copycat?

Here is a really good article on copying work. I've seen this come up quite a few times in the Etsy forums and my thoughts on the subject kind of vary. On the one hand...if someone rips me off, I can still be creative, they can't steal my creativity and I'll just think of something equally kick ass. (This is my, as one of my best friend's calls it, Pollyanna syndrome. LOL)

But on the other hand....I know a part of me would totally be like "Hey! That's my idea, damnit!" and be really pissed off. So, truthfully...I think I'd have to be in the situation to decide what I would do. How's that for non-committal? ha!

Anyway, I do agree with this writer's philosophy that there are very few original ideas left in the world and chances are things have been done before, you've just found a new way to do it or you have a bigger audience to see it!

back to basics

There is SO. MUCH. chatter about Twitter, Facebook, blogs, social media and the internet are an important part of marketing but it's certainly not the ONLY part.

Long before the internet came around, businesses thrived and built a brand from the ground up. They did so by focusing on basic marketing concepts that still, and always WILL, apply!

Here is an article that touches on those basics.

When people get a business license, I swear, this should be handed out with it. There is fantastic advivce in this article.

Pay attention! If you adhere to the these simple concepts and do them....you'll see results!

9 Marketing Tips from a Six-Year Old’s Lemonade Stan

The other day my daughter, Sophia, announced that she wanted to set up a lemonade stand.

Seeing as how I didn’t really want to spend the better part of my weekend selling lemonade, I tried to talk her out of it by showing her how much she’d need to spend to buy the lemonade mix, get the cups, that sort of thing.

Regardless of my best efforts, there was no changing her mind. She wanted to go into business and there wasn’t anything I was going to do to stop her.

So as I succumbed to my role as venture capitalist in her first business startup. I decided that at the very least, this would be a great chance to teach my daughter about counting money, basic business principals, that sort of thing.

We sat down with a pad of paper and started writing the business plan.

It didn’t take long before Sophia, becoming completely exasperated with my efforts to teach her about price structure and ROI, looked up at me and said:

“But Daddy, I just want to give it away. Our neighbors are so nice, I just want to give them the lemonade.”

Wow! What do you say to that? She hit me with a complete game changer that I didn’t expect.

Suddenly, the lemonade stand had taken on an entirely different meaning.

So we put away the business plan, she drew up a sign and my wife helped her mix a pitcher of lemonade.

Just as we were about to open for business, Sophia came in from the back porch with a sprig of mint she had cut from a pot.

“Can we put mint in the lemonade?” she asked. “I want to make it extra special.”

And with that, on a Sunday afternoon in a quiet neighborhood, she was open for business.

Within a few minutes, one of our neighbors who had heard about the project came over with 50 cents to buy a glass of lemonade. Twice the price my daughter was originally planning to charge.

“But it’s free” Sophia told her.

“That’s OK. I want to pay you for the lemonade”, she replied.

Not knowing what to do with the money, Sophia put it in a cup and set the cup on the table (where everyone could see it).

Before long, more neighbors came by, each one giving her at least 50 cents. When a car would pass, she would jump up and down and scream, “Free lemonade” hoping they would stop.

For the most part they didn’t. However, at one point, one did and the driver handed her three dollars for his glass of lemonade – 1,100 percent more then if she’d gone with her father’s suggestion of 25 cents per cup.

By the end of the day, Sophia had made a whopping eight dollars at her “free” lemonade stand.

When it was all said and done, I realized that although my original business lessons didn’t stick with my daughter, I learned a lot about marketing.

Here are nine lemonade stand tips that you can use to market your services:

1. Give people something for free and they will feel obligated to return the favor
When you help someone, it creates a natural desire to return the favor. As a web designer, provide helpful tips on your blog, participate in forums offering advice and helping non-designers, share ideas on Twitter. In doing so, you’ll not only build trust, but also develop relationships with potential clients.

2. Give potential customers a taste of your offerings
Offer free themes or templates with an easy upgrade to “pro” versions. Provide free stock graphics that hint at potential identity or branding packages while demonstrating your creativity. Just be sure to make it good. When users are excited about the base product, they are much more likely to upgrade.

3. Make it “Extra Special”
Don’t just offer lemonade. Put in that extra sprig of mint. Make everything you do something “extra special” and clients will take notice. Not only will they come back for more, they’ll tell their friends.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Tell Your “Neighbors” (Network!)
One of the first things my daughter did when she opened her stand was run next door and tell the neighbor. After getting his lemonade, he called two other neighbors to tell them about the lemonade stand – both of whom came right over with “donations”. Don’t be afraid to tell friends and colleagues about your services. You never know, they may talk to your next big client later that day.

5. Do What You Need to Do to Be Seen
It wasn’t enough to just put up a sign. My daughter’s advertising consisted of jumping up and down screaming “free lemonade” at passing cars. While it might seem extreme, it worked. How are you “screaming” about your business?

6. Be Persistent
Even though most of the cars passed by, my daughter didn’t give up. Finally, after many failed attempts, one of them did stop—doubling her income for the day.

7. Build Anticipation
My daughter’s first customer knew about her project and was there as soon as it opened. Don’t just launch your new web site, let people know it’s coming. Drop hints, show them screen shots, make them look forward to the big day.

8. Find Good Partners
My daughter’s little brother kept drinking the lemonade – not the best partner. However, her friend from down the street was out there with her jumping up and down screaming, doubling their advertising efforts.

9. Advertise Your Popularity
Once my daughter’s cup started filling with coins, people were more likely to “donate”. Don’t be afraid to advertise your popularity. Place download counters, comment counts and subscriber numbers in prominent places. Just make sure the stats are high enough to warrant a little bragging.

Something new....

Every day I receive media lead queries....3 times a day!....These are legit leads from reputable journalists, blog writers, etc. Some for well known publications, some for small blogs....it's a super broad list!

I go over these queries for my marketing clients and send them any relevant leads. This week I've started posting the leads in the Etsy forums. I did not post the source of the leads or the contact info in the forums, as that is one of my many little marketing "secrets" that set me apart from other marketing sellers on Etsy. And there's two reasons for wanting to post these leads. #1 I genuinely love to help people. #2 It is going to help raise my visibility and credibility with my marketing work, among Etsy sellers. Works for me! lol. I opted to have people convo me to get the contact info.

I did this a few times and I got so many requests for the contact info that I knew I needed to find another way to get these leads to Etsy sellers that were interested. It is super important to respond to these leads QUICKLY, so I definitely knew I needed a better way.

So I'm going to try this. When I get the leads, I'm going to post a link in the Etsy forums to here and just post the information here. :-) WAY easier and no one will fall through the cracks that way, either!

Here is a link to my page that explains this a little more and has a link to a short video that will give you tips on how best to respond to the queries! http://www.ataglancegraphics.com/p/media-leads.html

I'm so excited to start this!!! :-)

Back to it....

So I've done some housekeeping around here....again and I'm ready to really start focusing on building up this site. Over the last few months I have found so many good sites, articles and information and I really want to start posting about it here and really start building a following and reach Etsy sellers more. I really do love helping people and I'm realizing I'm going to be able to help a lot more people in a quicker way, if I just start blogging better!! Yeah..call me slow, it takes me a minute sometimes!!! :p

There is one thing that I've found recently that I am SUPER excited about. And I think I am going to start with posting about that. I have to run it by two people first and get their opinions and then I'll figure out how exaclty I'm going to do it.

Here's to posting again!
