Disappearing Act

My life got a bit out of control crazy for a few weeks. My family and I got into a car accident leaving a fundraiser for our kids’ school. (SO not nice, karma…that’s just not nice at all! Lol) We are all okay and feel very thankful we walked away from it. The kids have never been in an accident so there was a lot of talks and cuddles and comforting going on and then of course, dealing with the insurance and all that…blah, blah, blah….and of course in the midst of all this, my shop was never busier! Grrr…so life came down to doing what I absolutely HAD to do and putting all other stuff on hold. Unfortunately my blog became one of the “on hold” things. Thank you for understanding…AGAIN.

Now back to business!

Back to my “You can DO this!” feature….we left off on I was putting together some marketing materials for Tina for my first marketing suggestion for her shop.
One of my first ideas is to market her house shaped air fresheners to real estate agents. Either for gifts for clients or for themselves. It is a unique gift and the house shape makes it “personalized”. I wrote a letter for her to send to real estate agencies (printed on her letterhead I designed for her….every. single. thing. should have your brand!) and designed her a flyer to send also. Here is the picture of the flyer…

Here is a copy of the letter.

Now the first thing with the letter is to point out how your product will benefit them. A busy real estate broker will not get past the first paragraph if he/she does not see the point in the letter. In Tina’s case, I pointed out that as a business owner, they know how important the “little” things are. I introduced the hook, immediately. This should ensure they will keep reading!

I also told Tina that ideally, bringing this letter and flyer into real estate offices and shaking hands personally with the broker is the best way to market. However, not everyone is comfortable doing that, so my next suggestion is to mail the letter and flyer. This is not a bad way to do it..just getting out and talking to people and meeting people is always the best way to go, if that is your personality or if you know someone who is super personable, see if they’d like to help!

This was my first marketing idea for her and I am excited for her to do it and see what kind of results it brings her.

But remember…maybe not every idea will result in five hundred sales. Marketing is all about slow and steady and building. You are getting your name out there and introducing you and your product to people! So while you may not see immediate, huge results, trust that you ARE making progress! Having said that…. it IS important to keep an eye on your shop traffic and views. You want to make sure people are getting your marketing and at least looking! If they aren’t even looking, then you know you are on the wrong track with whatever marketing it is you put out. Remember marketing is not a science and sometimes ideas just don’t work…but it is all a learning experience and you will find the right formula for YOUR shop!

You can DO this! First things first.....

One of the first things I suggested Tina to do for her shop, Heartful Expression, was create a logo and then once she had that, a banner. I helped design her logo and she did her banner from there. It looks good! Go take a look and compare it to the picture from the previous post.

The best part of this, is now she has her “look”….her “brand”. This is huge, huge, huge, HUGE! Even if you are a one man shop, or solopreneur, you absolutely MUST have a logo and “look” that is distinctly your business before you begin putting yourself out there.

Why, you ask?

This the mantra I repeat over and over and OVER to the shops I help or give critiques to…

If you look like a business, you will feel like a business and once you start feeling like a business, you will start acting like one and once you start acting like one…well then, people will start treating you like one!!!

I mean really? Who’s going to take you seriously if YOU don’t? And not having a “look” or “brand”, gives the appearance of you not caring or at the very least, not being invested in your business.

Now your first argument will be….”But I can’t afford it…”. You can’t afford not to! This is one of the most important things that so many one man shops blow off. Because of the internet, you now CAN start a business with relative ease. But it doesn’t mean you SHOULD take the “easy” way out and just do it half-assed. (Forgive me…I’m blunt.) If you do, half-assed results is what you’re going to get! Take your business seriously…you should invest as much into it as you would a brick and mortar business because regardless of where your storefront is, the fact remains, it’s still a storefront and one that you want people to want to shop at!

I’m going to post links to a couple of articles that talk about the importance of having a logo and branding yourself in a straight to the point voice and not a bunch of marketing mumbo jumbo that is next to impossible for someone who doesn't have a marketing degree to understand. (Which, for the record, I don't have. 15 years involved in the real estate industry is my "degree.")

Big Plans!

HI guys!

So obviously…well, I hope it’s obvious!..you noticed I didn’t post my Write to Sell feature last week or this week. I’ve decided to scale back on that feature. At this point, there are enough before and afters to give you a really good variety of examples to help you out. I think I will continue to do it, because it’s always good to have new ones but I’m just going to do it on a monthly basis. Now if any of you need help, don’t forget to always feel free to ask! I don’t mind taking a minute or two to look over one of your descriptions and help you “fine tune” it.

Now on to the big plans, part of this post....even though this feature will be gone, I do have something else planned. In its place, I am doing something called "You Can DO This!". My ultimate, end goal is to help shops on Etsy or even off Etsy become more successful. I want to help “one man shops” or “solopreneurs” , as they are sometimes called, organize their business, get their shop looking good and then give them some good marketing ideas to help them get going. So many of my clients talk about my personality…that my excitement motivates THEM. It’s such a compliment and for a long time now, it’s made me realize that if I can bring that kind of excitement to people and their shops, it’s absolutely contagious and it will make them want to GET UP RIGHT THIS SECOND AND WORK ON THEIR SHOP!!!! LOL And that’s how I want to make people feel!!! And sometimes that is EXACTLY what people need…that strong cheerleader with really great but simple ideas!! And THAT is exactly what I want to be!!!

So keeping this end goal in mind, ever since I started this blog, I have wanted to do something like this. I wanted to find a shop that had a good idea but was just starting out…not many sales, not much inventory, etc.,and help the seller build it. I offer so much marketing stuff and I have been looking for an opportunity to “prove” that if you apply yourself, it really will work!

Now another thing I needed was someone that was truly on board….someone that would take my direction and be completely open minded and willing to try what I suggest and follow through....I have found that shop!!!

Heartful Expressions.
Here is a peak of her shop, right after I asked her if she’d be willing to be my “guinea pig, so to speak.

She wholeheartedly agreed and is VERY enthusiastic about this.

Now this first couple of weeks will be spent getting her shop ready. Right now we are working on her logo and her branding, which is HUGELY important and no shop should start marketing before they have their branding in check. She is working on building her inventory. I also gave her a marketing idea and I am working on the details of that, for her. But the idea is something we won’t roll out until her shop looks good.

Here’s what she’s doing…
•Building good inventory (At least 20-25 items)
•Policies and profile well written. Same for descriptions and shop announcement
•Banner, featuring her logo and her brand or “look”.
And last but not least, working on her product photos.

These are her first steps.….and these steps will make sure her shop is ready for people to “walk in” and buy from!

Valentine's Marketing idea...help!!!

Hello, my most awesome blog readers! I need some help trying to decide something.
I have a marketing idea that I want to “sell”. It’s one of my better ones that is fairly simple and super inexpensive to actually put to action and could really generate some great sales.

So here is the idea…you all are getting the idea for “free”. But if you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you’ve probably already heard it. I’m pretty sure I’ve posted this idea to my blog. Well, if you haven’t…here you go! lol

If you have a product that is a good gift idea for women, I suggest you market to men dominated businesses for Valentine’s Day. Businesses like mechanics, construction offices, auto parts stores, etc. See where I’m going?

Now, to do this, you need a letter to the manger/owner, asking if it is okay to leave your flyer/catalog/brochure around the office for the guys to check out. And this letter needs to be convincing, so they help promote you. You also need the flyer/brochure/catalog designed.

Now here is where I’m on the fence. I want to “sell” this. The idea, the letter and the flyer. In the item description, do I put what the idea is and then basically sell the letter and the flyer….or do I just say it’s a kick ass marketing idea that you will LOVE and will generate new customers? I’m thinking the fee is going to be around $35-$40.

Would you feel ripped off if I did the second option, you bought it, and this was the idea that I sold you?

Would you even take a chance buying it if you didn’t know what the idea was?

Would you see this listing, LOVE the idea and take it and do it, without purchasing anything?

So give me some feedback, help me decided what to do. I’d really like to get this listing up this weekend so I can jump on the Valentine’s day holiday.

what it took me a bit longer to figure out.

That I would not be all settled and up and running as quickly as I planned.

Right before the big move, my computer died. I needed a new part that we had shipped to Alaska and it took FOREVER to get here. Grrr...the joys of living in Alaska. Even Fed Ex takes forever. lol.

And then I just completely underestimated just how busy I would be getting ready for Christmas AND trying to get settled in. Oops...BIG ooops.

So I hope you guys can hang in there a bit longer. I am going to try to get my Write to Sell feature for this week up, sometime in the next couple of days.

I am picking her because what she has for her opening lines are really good. These are the sentences that I usually suggest you use to appeal to the need or want the item is fulfilling for your customer and she does that with what she has! I added one little line, but otherwise I really liked what she already had, so this is going to be an example of how just tightening up the description and formatting it a bit different can make a big difference!

So my writing creativity took a nosedive...my artistic side has been out in full swing. I wanted to share...I think this is a really great gift idea and I am SO excited to get this listing up in my shop.

I am going to start offering a personalized blog poster. Here's the idea....

The image on the poster will be the blog banner and then the quote will go underneath....

For so many people, their blog is a huge part of their lives and I think to give someone a way to artistically display their blog, is awesome!

This is a set of 10 monkey themed birthday invitations. The monkey, reds, teals, and yellows make this a bright, fun card for your child's monkey or circus themed birthday party. The cards measure 5.25 x 5.25 and come with envelopes.

The monkey was cut using a diecut and detailed and attached by hand. She is wearing a bow that matches the rest of the paper. If you need this for a little boy I can attach a hat instead of a bow.

The banner is handmade using coordinating designer paper and is stamped with "party". It is attached at the edges using brads but otherwise hangs freely from the card to give the card movement.

The inside of the card will be computer typed. Sentiments and information will be specified by you. These are made to order so please allow 1 week from purchase before they are mailed. If you need them sooner convo me before buying, and I'll see what I can do.

I’ve run across this sentiment quite a bit recently in the forums…

“Someone said…..my pictures suck, my prices are too high/low, my banner is lousy, etc. so I…..CHANGED WHAT I’M DOING BASED ON ONE PERSON’S OPINION.”

Come on, guys! You are never going to convince people to believe in what you are selling if YOU don’t. Be confident! KNOW what you are about! And be proud of it!

I am all about critiques and improving based on them and it’s a part of Etsy that I absolutely LOVE and think is truly amazing, but so many times people will let ONE opinion send them into a bout of self doubt and having them running to change their whole shop. That shouldn’t happen.

Look at your shop….you know what you need improving on, but you also know what you DON’T need improving on. Figure out why you like things the way they are and be able to explain it…at least to yourself! So when someone DOES have a differing opinion, you can tell yourself why you have it the way it is, and leave it be or think maybe they are on to something so you decide to get more opinions and feedback! And that is what you should always do. Get more than one opinion. If someone tells you something and you think they may be right and you start that self-doubt talk, get some other feedback and then really analyze things.

For instance… When I first opened, I had a few people tell me my shop announcement was too long. I didn’t agree. I believe (and still do…) that even though my shop announcement is long, it is interesting and funny enough that people keep reading. And I have the convos, clients and sales to back that hunch up. But I really believed in my announcement, I think it is a really important part of my shop. It is very me…it lets my clients know exactly what kind of person they are doing business with, right from the start. And I like that…

And I’m not telling you to not listen to feedback. It’s important and it’s how we grow. As business owners, we all need to be open to opinions and critiques. Just don’t let yourself be CONSUMED by them and know how to weed through them and use them to your advantage…not your disadvantage....good or bad.

Believe in yourself and KNOW what you and your shop are about…and when you start exuding that kind of confidence, you’ll find yourself running a better business!

`I got a questions yesterday and it was a very good one and I'd like to address it here. This is something I've touched on before but it's always good to revisit.

Some people swear by SEO and will write for that. They make sure those first 140 words are filled with their keywords, in the hopes that Google will find them and rank them high on a search page.

And for some people that may work really well. However, it's not my personal philosophy or method. I believe that writing good copy (writing to sell) and spending time doing some local, offline and some well placed online marketing is far more productive and yields way better results for crafters and other microbusinesses than SEO does.

For most crafters and microbusinesses, it's a struggle to do. They labor and agonize over it. And then they still don't come up on the first page of the searches. Google changes how they rank their pages constantly. And they keep it secret. Who wants to try to constantly keep up with that in the hopes that you land on the front page of Google search? I don't. Even if I did land there...could I seriously handle the volume of business? Nope, I probably couldn't. I enjoy working closely with my clients and if I were to get overwhelmed with them, it would make me stressed and take the fun out of what I do. But that's just me....maybe you could handle that sudden volume of customers and if that is the case that would go on the "pro" side of your debate on writing your descriptions for SEO or not.

Everyone has different methods and means. I don't believe SEO is worth the stress for me and for most of my clients. I prefer to write to sell with my copy and then do some targeted marketing on and offline. That suits me better. I enjoy it far more and I get better results AND less stress. Perfect for me and my clients.

So really, it's all about what you prefer to do. You don't HAVE to write brilliant SEO descriptions to make your shop a success. There ARE other ways. If the mere subject of SEO stresses you out beyond belief find other ways to promote your shop. Some of what we do is stressful, no doubt. Running a business is rarely stress free but there certainly are stresses that you can make easier or even eliminate if think outside the box a bit and find other ways to do things that are effective but just not as stressful!

Now there is ONE deviation from this. Your titles absolutely SHOULD use your keywords!! And your tags should be good. You definitely want to be found in Etsy searches. My point in this post is to address SEO and Google search. You should always write your title using words that people would search for what you are selling with...ALWAYS!!!!

USP and why you need one!

If you’ve done any research on marketing, you’ve probably seen this acronym before. And maybe even you’ve read a little bit about it. And more than likely you’ve probably thought you didn’t need one or that’s something for “bigger” businesses.
But the truth is…if you are serious about your business and want it to become successful, you need to have one.

Absolutely.

Here’s why…..your USP is your “unique selling proposition”.

“What the heck is that?” You ask. This is what makes YOU different…your unique selling proposition tells your potential customers why buying your items is better than buying the same thing from a competitor and whatever you come up with for a reason, (your USP!) should be the foundation of all your advertising.

I’ve talked a lot on this blog about writing to your customers needs and wants when you write your item descriptions. The same (almost) concept applies here. Your USP should talk about the benefits of buying your items from you. It shouldn’t talk about the “features” of your items but rather how buying from you will benefit your customers.

Here’s an example, using my shop. In my advertising, I point out that a lot of my marketing listings are shop specific. This benefits my clients. Rather than just saying I have marketing guides and reports that will help make you more successful (this is simply one feature of my items), by pointing out the work is shop specific, I am letting them know they are getting something that will benefit them, specifically. This changes the everything and I can all but guarantee I have gotten sales because of this.

That’s it. It’s as simple as that. Your USP statement doesn’t have to be anything extraordinary or spectacular. Just simply pointing out why buying from you will benefit your customers. Easy, peasy!!

Even if you are successful already and feel you don’t need to have one….at the very least, having a foundation will help streamline your marketing efforts and give you a clear path to follow. Not a bad idea, right? Right!

To start promoting your items for the Christmas season...

This week I'm doing something a litle different than the "Write to Sell" feature...I'm going to show you how, if you write to your customers emotions, you can increase your sales during the holiday season!

Now is when we start to see the very beginnings of the Christmas season and it is time to start promoting your items or at least start thinking about ways to promote your items...and I'm going to show you a way that will help get those sales!

When you are promoting something as a gift don't just put it out there "Such and Such for sale!" or "Such and Such is the perfect gift!"...you gotta put some excitement and fun into it by telling them exactly WHY it would be a perfect gift!

For example...I'm going to start promoting this lyric poster.... http://www.etsy.com/listing/56575363/just-the-way-you-are-lyric-typography
and in the promotion I’m going to talk about how it’s a very romantic, sweep her off her feet gift that is super affordable! And I'm going to tell them they can make it even "bigger" if they buy an itunes gift card to go with it, so that the recipient can buy the song. Talk about the PERFECT romantic gift! Right?!?!

The important thing to remember is that you have to point out EXACTLY why the gift would rock...and for who it would be PERFECT for! Talk to people, rather than at them and damnit, get excited!!! Excitment begets excitement....seriously! If your copy oozes excitement, it is contagious and it will make people want to click buy!

I’m going to tweet this like this...
"Hey guys!! Looking for the perfect gift? Pair this with an itunes gift card & you can’t go wrong!!”

Everything I make is made in small batches with upcycled and reclaimed fabrics. Remaking fabric items into something new is my passion. Making the world a better place one UPTOTE at a time!
